About the Project Redefining IoT connectivity for the 6G era

Today’s 5G networks still struggle to deliver on the IoT promise — fragmented deployments, poor coverage in harsh environments, roaming-dependent architectures, and limited energy efficiency prevent truly scalable IoT services from reaching their potential.

PIONEERS-6G directly addresses these limitations by designing the Omni-IoT platform, an AI-native, IoT-first architecture spanning Device, Radio Access Network (RAN), and Core Network (CN) domains. Key innovations include intelligent energy-harvesting devices, Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC), TN-NTN multi-connectivity, and a causal AI orchestration framework with zero-trust security.

Validated through four real-world proofs-of-concept — Industrial, Underground, Underwater, and Global IoT — the project will deliver measurable KPI and KVI improvements over 5G, reinforcing Europe’s leadership in next-generation digital infrastructure.

Intelligent IoT Devices


Adaptive multi-mode operation, energy harvesting-aware duty cycling, on-device AI/ML execution (TinyML), and Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) security — enabling true autonomy in constrained environments.

6G Radio Access Network


TN-NTN multi-connectivity for global coverage, multi-technology ISAC and high-precision positioning combining UWB, GNSS, RIS, and AI/ML-driven sidelink — resilient in underground and underwater conditions.

AI-Native Core Network


Federated cloud/edge-native architecture with causal ML orchestration, OmniID global identity framework, zero-trust security, NomadiX flexible CN placement, and cross-domain sovereign IoT verticals.
